This collection of works by the leading Czech scholar in the field of Czech studies, Olga Müllerová, contains thirty papers concerning the research of spoken Czech and its function in communication. The studies are divided into five sections. The texts in the first section deal with the phenomenon of dialogue, the nature of dialogic speech acts and the construction of dialogic texts. The second section focuses on the social-psychological aspects of dialogues, on the relationships and intentions of the participants – among other things, how they cooperate in the course of a conversation, how misunderstandings or conflicts occur here, and how the communicative behaviour of men and women differs. The studies in the third section present syntactic devices typical for spoken discourse, e.g. repetition, correction, addition and contact expressions. The fourth section elaborates the typology of dialogues and spoken utterances. The fifth section covers interpretations of dialogues in media, radio and television interviews.
