The topic of the book is the the grammatical construction traditionally referred to as the reflexive passive: the verb is used in the reflexive form and the position of the syntactic subject lacks the agent. The construction is viewed primarily from a diachronic perspective. In the theoretical part, the current state of knowledge about this construction is framed in the context of international (mainly typological) literature concerning the issues of reflexivity and deagentisation as well as theoretical literature (dealing mainly with grammaticalisation). The analytical part presents research into the use of the construction in Czech texts from the 15th-17th centuries. The analysis focuses on the individual morphosyntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of the passive reflexive construction. It also identifies the typical contexts in which it was used, paying special attention to the ambiguous cases which are crucial from a diachronic point of view because they may represent the potential source contexts of the assumed grammaticalization process.
