The Department of Contemporary Lexicology and Lexicography of the Czech Language Institute has been developing a new monolingual dictionary of contemporary Czech since early 2012. It is envisioned as a mid-sized dictionary with an expected 60–70,000 entries. The aim is to describe the vocabulary of contemporary Czech (i.e. since 1945), including both general vocabulary used in official and semi-official public communication and vocabulary common in ordinary (i.e. non-public, unofficial) communication.
The scope and processing methodology of the dictionary make it an academic dictionary, i.e. it contains sophisticated, typified and structured explanations of word meanings, with a moderately rich array of examples documenting typical word usage, fairly elaborate descriptions of basic semantic relations, especially synonyms and antonyms, descriptions of the grammatical properties of words and of the symptomatology of words in terms of style, time, space, frequency and pragmatics (i.e. attitudinal and evaluative).
The dictionary entries are published in alphabetical sections.
