Our Mission and Work

The Czech Language Institute’s (CLI) mission is to conduct scientific research on the Czech language and language education, help apply research results and provide research infrastructure, including specialised language teaching.

The Institute’s core task is carrying out scientific research on the Czech national language and its current state, historical development and relationship to other languages, particularly in terms of vocabulary, grammatical structure, style differentiation and text construction. It also conducts research on general linguistics and language didactics.

The CLI’s secondary tasks include Czech language and foreign language instruction to entities outside of the Czech Academy of Sciences, based on available capacity in CLI language courses. The conditions of secondary tasks are determined by the relevant business licences and the Act on Public Research Institutions.

CLI staff helps advance Czech language education in Czech society through teaching engagements at a number of universities. CLI staff also presents Czech language topics and makes current research results accessible to the general public.
