Vokabulář webový (Web Vocabulary)

Vokabulář webový is an internet application containing texts, images and audio resources for exploring historical Czech. It was launched in November 2006 and new material is gradually added. The Department of Language Development of the Czech Language Institute developed and administers Vokabulář webový.

Currently, Vokabulář webový  aggregates the following lexical reference sources: Malý staročeský slovník (MSS)Slovník staročeský Jana Gebauera (GbSlov)Staročeský slovník, sešit 1–26 (StčS)Slovníček staré češtiny Františka Šimka (ŠimekSlov)Index Slovníku staročeských osobních jmen Jana Svobody (IndexSvob)Elektronický slovník staré češtiny (ESSČ) and the digitalizovaná lístková kartotéka Jana Gebauera.

Vokabulář also presents dictionaries that have not yet been included in the aggregated search. These include two editions of Jan Václav Pohl's Česko-německý slovnář (Czech-German Dictionary). Online versions of these editions were created by Prof. Tilman Berger and his team from the University of Tübingen. Other sources not included in the aggregated search are e.g. Dodavky ke slovníku Josefa Jungmanna by F. L. Čelakovský; Slovář český, to jest slova některá česká jak od Latinářův, tak i od Němcův vypůjčená, zase napravená a v vlastní českou řeč obrácená k užívání milovníkův české řeči by Jan František Josef Ryvola and Deutsch-böhmisches Wörterbuch by Josef Dobrovský, Thesaurus Linguae Bohemicae by Václav Jan Rosa and the online edition of tříjazyčného nomenklátoru Daniela Adama z Veleslavína, which is linked to digitised scans of the original printed version. The Slovník česko-německý  by Josef Jungman is also available at Vokabulář as digitised scans supplemented with metadata. The scans are from a book in which the author himself indicated corrections and additions.

Vokabulář also contains resources that enable users to obtain information that goes beyond specific lexical units. The Staročeská textová banka contains texts of Old Czech literature and provides, to some extent, documentation of Old Czech lexicographical sources that lack documentation. The Středněčeská textová banka includes non-Old Czech texts, i.e. from the 1500s to the early 1800s. Users may work with the banks using the original corpus manager developed for Vokabulář or by using the KonText application. In the edičním modulu we present literary texts accompanied by basic explanations. Older Czech literature is also available as audiobooks.

Users can also find references on historical Czech in the modulu digitalizovaných mluvnic and similar manuals from the 16th to 19th centuries. The module enables study of the contemporary state of, and changes to, the Czech language system, as well as research on the development of Czech linguistics. In the modulu odborné literatury, Historická mluvnice jazyka českého (Historical Grammar Book of the Czech Language) by Jan Gebauer and the monographs Vývojové postupy slovní zásoby (Lexis Historical Development) and Rekonstrukce lexikálního vývoje (Reconstruction of Lexical Development) are published in full-text form.

In the nástroje section, tools for editing historical texts are freely available, along with an accompanying certified use methodology, as well as tools to facilitate machine analysis of texts. The development of Vokabulář webový was funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic: project ID DF12P01OVV028, project title "Information Technology Serving the Linguistic and Cultural Diversity". Additional funding came from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports: project ID LM2015081 under the project “Research Infrastructure for Diachronic Bohemistics” (acronym RIDICS) within the Large Infrastructure Programme for Research and Development and the Strategy AV21 programme administered by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.
