Atlas of the Dialects of the Czech language: Vowel Shortening presents the readers the research issues
of vowel shortening in the dialects of the Czech Republic. The atlas is unique in its visual style:
Analytical and synthetic dialect maps in a newly compiled set of characters and symbols. The first section of the atlas contains analytical dialect maps depicting vocalic shortening in 16 selected words.
The maps depict the spatial distribution of vowel variants in the Nominative case, in some instances
also in other cases. The second section of the atlas contains synthetic dialect maps compiled by type
and region from the maps in the first section. Maps of 6 types and 13 regions
of vocalic reductions represent the culmination of the cartographic work and provide valuable
dialectological results.
